Subsidized Courses in the Arab Periphery
Over the past 20 years the percentage of working people in Israel living under the poverty line has risen to 40%. The percentage is even higher among the Arab population in Israel. The struggle with this harsh economic reality has resulted in the fact that many Arab citizens of Israel find themselves in a passive and stagnated position. SEA offers activists in social change organizations operating among Arab citizens, knowledge and tools to enable them to continue their activities and to recruit new activists to create change in their own communities.
Goals
This Project will facilitate knowledge on social economic issues from a critical perspective, expand knowledge on these issues and motivate the participants in the Project to take part in social change using the new tools they acquired, while focusing on four designated Arab communities each year.
Activities
To fulfill these goals, SEA will work each year, with 4 pre-selected Arab communities, and cooperate with local organizations in each community. SEA will hire local coordinators to identify potential participants (20 people in each course at least) with 50% of the participants being activists in local organizations and 50% from the general local community. In addition the coordinators will identify Arabic speaking lecturers – 10 at least for each community and identify facilities where courses will be held. Each group will participate in at least five meetings of 1.5 hours each. Our goal is to subsidize the courses, facilitate regular participation, expose participants to their local organizations, involve new recruits in those organizations, and create social change in their communities.
Participantswill be requested to complete evaluation forms before the course commences and at the end of the courses in order to examine: acquired knowledge; information on local organizations; and involvement of the participants in the community. The participants will be asked to answer an additional questionnaire three months later to check their involvement with local community organizations.
Budget
The Project cost is $28,650 annually. SEA expects to cover part of this sum from private donors and foundations such as the New Israel Fund and The Goldman Foundation. We need your help! Your donation of $9,000 will assist in covering the missing amount in the Project’s budget for The 2007-8 academic year and will help SEA fulfill its mission.
