Needed - Social Economic Knowledge
In the last 20 years, social economic policy has resulted in a rising number of working people living under the poverty line (40%). This policy was made possible because there is a lack of critical and coherent public social economic discourse in Israel. Knowledge and tools on issues such as understanding State decision making processes, State liability for its citizens and local authorities’ management, is needed for the public to start challenging this policy and assist in changing it course.
The Needed - Social Economic Knowledge Project will provide knowledge on social economic issues from a critical perspective and will present alternatives to expand critical economical knowledge, by offering short and full semester courses at 4 branches nationwide. SEA’s founders believe that critical knowledge will motivate the participants in the courses to take part in activities for social change
The Project’s activities in each of the four branches will include at least two courses during each semester, in which at least twenty students will participate regularly in each of the courses. Hired branch coordinators, together with SEA’s academic advisor, will construct courses schedules, locate lecturers, find volunteer coordinators for each course and locate courses’ facilities. 6000 copies of SEA bulletin with the list of the new courses offered will be distributed before each semester by branch activists to reach maximum potential participation in the offered courses.
To measure both its ability to grow and sustain its activities as well as the feedback received from students, at the end of each course, students will be asked to fill out an evaluation form. Three months later a follow-up evaluation form will check the percentage of the participants who have joined activities for social change. Additionally, in each of the branches coordinators and activists, who are the branch leaders, will meet regularly to re-assess the courses and evaluate the needs of the class.
Success
In addition to the courses held at its four branches - Beer Sheva, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa, SEA holds classes in different locations in the periphery such as the Arab Village of Arara, the Bedouin city Rahat, the city of Sderot, and the city of Beit-Shemesh. All teachers (now more then 400) donate their time, and the symbolic tuition is used to cover rental expenses of the classrooms. SEA has created a network of cooperation with different organizations. In 2006 – some (sixteen) provide facilities, some (ten) assisted in networking and publication and some (twelve) offered support to deal with shared concerns.
Budget
The Project’s budget is $143,370 a year. SEA expects self generated income from tuition fees as well as income from private donors and foundation such as the New Israel Fund, Levinson Foundation and Oxfam GB to support the Project. We need your help! Your donation of $11,000 will assist in covering the missing amount in the Project’s budget for the 2007-8 academic year and will allow SEA to fulfill its mission of much needed social change
